“البداية والنهاية” هو من أعظم كتب التاريخ الإسلامي وأوسعها، ألفه الإمام الحافظ إسماعيل بن عمر بن كثير (ت774هـ)، العالم المفسر والمؤرخ الشافعي المعروف، وصاحب التفسير الشهير.

يتناول الكتاب تاريخ البشرية منذ خلق السماوات والأرض، وخلق آدم عليه السلام، مرورًا بقصص الأنبياء والأمم، ثم سيرة النبي ﷺ مفصلة، ثم تاريخ الخلفاء الراشدين، والدول الإسلامية، والمعارك، والفتن، حتى أخبار الساعة وأحداث يوم القيامة، ووصف الجنة والنار.

يمتاز الكتاب بمنهجه الحديثي، إذ يحرص ابن كثير على تخريج الروايات، ويميز بين الصحيح والضعيف، مع الرد على الإسرائيليات الباطلة، ويُظهر التزامًا واضحًا بعقيدة السلف في عرضه للغيب وأخبار الأنبياء.
